    Group accountant job description

The role of a group accountant includes consolidating financial statements and understanding the financial position and cash flow of large and complex organizations. Having an in-depth knowledge of accounting and any applicable legislation/regulations (i.e. IFRS, K3) is obviously vital. This position may report to a head of accounting, finance manager, or directly to the CFO.

    In practice

The work of a group accountant commonly consists of reporting group companies, consolidating during monthly/quarterly/annual close, preparing annual reports in accordance with applicable regulations, preparing financial statements for different intervals, and handling eliminations. In some cases, group accountants may also have a responsibility to ensure high-quality accounting throughout the organization, as well as, be responsible for the development and improvement of routines and processes.

The finance department and its design

The accounting department can be likened to the heart of the finance department. It holds vital importance in small, medium, and large-cap organizations. In smaller companies, it’s not uncommon for a single individual to shoulder the entire financial responsibility of the accounting team. They often have the title of finance manager. As the size and complexity of the organization grow, so does the finance department. In small/mid-cap companies the standard set-up usually contains a finance manager, accountants, and accounting clerks/bookkeepers. In large organizations, finance functions often consist of multiple individuals who often have specialized roles i.e. some accounting clerks will focus entirely on accounts payable or receivable and handling the invoice process between clients and suppliers, payroll specialists, tax specialists, etc. Generally, the accounting manager has overall responsibility for this team and often reports directly to the CFO. In large and complex organizations there may be a finance team responsible for the accounts on a group level, and this is where the role of group accountant is placed.

    Skills and competences

Group accountants are expected to have a solid background and knowledge of accounting principles/regulations, and are able to be self-sufficient with strong analytical skills. Furthermore, a group accountant should be a confident decision-maker who knows how to prioritize, delegate, and take action when required. It is advantageous to have a long-standing experience in similar roles.

    Software knowledge

Being financial software savvy is definitely advantageous for our customers. We are therefore selective in our consultant scouting process. Our consultants have good knowledge of one or more financial systems i.e. consolidation systems such as Aaro, Hyperion (HFM), Cognos (Cognos Controller) and Ocra, and large ERP systems such as SAP, Agresso, Navision, or Visma. We believe consultants should be able to hit the ground running, and to do this software knowledge is essential.

    Industry Experience

Our recruiters at CFO Recruitment have industry experience, and we believe this is key in pairing the right individual with the right client. With our own background in finance, we can quickly identify the resource issue and what is required to find a high-quality solution. We pull fitting, available consultants from our extensive network to connect with our clients. We at CFO Recruitment have had a broad range of job titles, come from different branches, and organization sizes, and can understand the complexity and nuances of each client request. We are also aware of how important culture and industry knowledge is, and work to fit the right individual with the right placement.

    Price group accountant consultant

The pricing structure for an interim group accountant is dependent on the profile requested i.e. the degree of responsibility, competence, education, industry experience, etc. Market trends have indicated high demand and low supply over the last couple of years which has led to increasing costs. However, our well-established accounting specialists network includes a large number of consultants with different profiles where we’re confident we’ll be able to connect our customers and consultants correctly.
